Licence Eligibility, Upgrade Pathways, and Training Questions Answered

Makene's Truck Driver Training, Perth, WA, provides heavy vehicle licence training for every class from LR through to MC. The questions below cover the WA-specific eligibility rules, upgrade pathways, and training details that tend to sit behind generic FAQ answers — giving you the real information you need to plan your next step with confidence.

  • What Are the WA Eligibility Requirements for Each Licence Class?

WA sets clear experience thresholds before you can sit a practical driving assessment. An HR licence covers vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM greater than eight tonnes; to be eligible you must have held a C-class licence for at least two years, or held an LR or MR licence for at least one year. To apply for an HC licence, you need to have held both a C-class licence for three years and an MR or HR licence for at least one year. For the MC class, you must have held both a C-class licence for at least three years and an HR or HC licence for at least one year; once licenced you may drive any heavy combination towing two or more trailers, including road trains and B-doubles.

All classes of truck licence in WA require an eye test before sitting the practical examination, and you must meet national medical standards. Suspended or expired licence periods do not count toward these experience thresholds, so it is worth confirming your eligible time before booking.

  • How Does the Gearbox Choice on Assessment Day Affect Your Licence?

Your gearbox selection at assessment determines which vehicles you may legally drive afterwards. You must decide which gearbox condition you require based on the trucks you plan to drive; if you complete the practical driving assessment in an automatic, you will only be permitted to drive that gearbox type. Makene's offers HR training across automatic, synchromesh, and Road Ranger gearboxes, with HR automatic training ranging from 2 to 15 hours, synchromesh from 6 to 15 hours, and Road Ranger from 8 to 15 hours, with all classes including theory and the test. Choosing the correct gearbox from the outset avoids the cost and time of a restriction removal later.

  • Who Conducts the Practical Driving Assessment for Each Class?

The assessment body varies by licence class and this is a point that catches many students off guard. For HR and HC licences, you may use an approved Registered Training Organisation for your practical driving assessment, or you can register to sit with a Department of Transport assessor. MC class applicants must book their practical driving assessment with an approved provider, as training and assessment for this class has been fully outsourced to the private sector. Makene's Driving School offers nationally recognised training for HR (TLIC3004), HC (TLIC3005), and MC (TLIC4006) units, covering the full assessment pathway in-house.

  • Can I Train While Working Full-Time?

Heavy vehicle licence training can fit around most working schedules. Makene's offers weekday and weekend training sessions, allowing you to complete your heavy vehicle licence training in Perth at a pace that suits your lifestyle. Hour allocations vary considerably by experience level, so students with prior industry exposure may require far fewer sessions than the maximum range. Speak with an instructor before booking to get an honest estimate based on your background. Call 0418 948 152 to discuss your situation and arrange a session that works for you, or explore course details at the lessons page and the before you begin page.
